Is a satellite orbiting earth free from earths gravity ? Why or why not

No, because gravitational fields go on forever.

No . . . the earth's gravitational force is a requirement of the satellite maintaining orbit around the planet . . . without it, you could expect the satellite to just float on being earth like a comet passing by
